Alvar Aallon Katu Apartments - Case Study
Positioned on the waterfront edge of Helsinki, the Alvar Aallon Katu Apartments form part of the landmark Töölönlahti district redevelopment, directly opposite Finlandia Hall designed by Alvar Aalto.
Completed in 2014 following a first-place invited competition win, the development comprises two residential buildings overlooking Töölönlahti Bay, occupying one of the most prominent sites within the area. Designed to balance presence with restraint, the architecture combines sculptural form with a calm and timeless material palette.
At street level and from closer viewpoints, the simplicity of the façade grid reveals carefully layered architectural detail. Balconies, terraces and full-height glazing are integrated within the structure to create rhythm and individuality across the elevations. Grey stone, white plaster and timber finishes combine to give the buildings a refined and enduring appearance, while the varying façade depths introduce a continuous interplay of light and shadow.
Inside, the architectural language becomes softer and more fluid. Curved walls define the circulation spaces, guiding residents through spiralling staircases illuminated by overhead skylights. The sculptural stairwells form central voids within each building, bringing natural light deep into the interiors and creating a strong sense of openness throughout the communal spaces.
The apartments themselves are designed to maximise the connection with the surrounding landscape and cityscape. Full-height windows and generous balconies frame panoramic views across Finlandia Park, the city centre and the cultural landmarks surrounding Töölönlahti Bay. The result is a residential environment that feels both connected to the city and immersed in the calm of the waterfront setting.
The project reflects a carefully considered approach to contemporary urban living — combining strong architectural identity with understated detailing, natural light and a close relationship to its surroundings.
