ECLISSE the pocket door system of choice for retirement apartments, assisted living housing and care home projects

Posted by Caroline Clarkson on 8th Dec 2020

According to the Office of National Statistics the UK population has been steadily getting older. Currently around seventeen percent of the population is over 65 and this trend is expected to rise to over 23% by 2035. This has resulted in a strong demand for luxury care homes, retirement apartments, assisted living housing and care homes. In line with this demand we have seen an increase in orders for pocket door systems for care related projects. This is because pocket doors can be easy to use for clients with reduced mobility, in a wheelchair, with impaired vision or with reduced grip/motor skills whilst still being aesthetically pleasing. Add to this the fact that ECLISSE pocket door systems are easy to assemble and install, maintenance free, come with a 15 year guarantee and are tested to 25 years of average use, it is unsurprising that our systems have become the system of choice for care home, assisted-living and retirement projects.

The beauty of pocket doors is they are top hung so a threshold strip is not required, so nothing to obstructs smooth passage from one room to another. The fact that the door disappears into a pocket in the wall means that unlike with a hinged door there is no issue of the leading edge posing a hazard for partially sighted people.

For wheelchair users our pocket door system can be installed with a minimum effective clear opening widths of 800mm or above. If required a partially glazed door can be added to the system for visibility and the door can be installed with an easy to hold bar handle instead of a flush pull.

Accessibility issues posed by a hinged door

For projects that provide a higher level of care our pocket door system for use with a hoist has been included. In another project where the focus is to provide a high level of independent living for wheelchair users our e-motion system which automates the opening and closing action of the pocket door either via switch, radar sensor or remote control has been specified.

Here are a handful of examples of projects that provide a flavour of where and how our pocket doors systems are being incorporated into housing projects from retirement apartments to care homes.

The homes include many technological innovations and advances and one such innovation is an automated pocket door that combines the ECLISSE Classic pocket door system with the ECLISSE e-motion device. This allows the ECLISSE Classic Pocket Door system to open and shut at the touch of a button, the feature being that the door disappears into the wall, eliminating the need for reaching for the door and manoeuvring around it.
