Grand Designs- The Street highlights the increasing popularity of self-building

ECLISSE products have long been a favourite of the self-build community which is why we are taking part in the Build It Live Show in Bicester 8/9 June 2019 and our pocket door systems are being included in Built It Magazine's Self Build Education House at Graven Hill. Graven hill is of course the custom build community where the 'Grand Designs-The Street' series was filmed.

In the series 'Grand Designs - The Street', presenter, Kevin McCloud, has been tracking the journey of 10 house builders as they embark on a mission to construct their own self-build houses at Graven Hill, the UK’s largest self-build and custom build community. Their journeys take them from house design, through to construction and build, with the inevitable hiccups and ultimate highs of the finished build.

The series explores how self-build can be for everyone starting with the most senior self-builders Terry and Olwen, and Lynn in episode 1 and moving onto young couples Jack & Hannah and James & Shannon in episode 2. The former are aiming to build a future proofed home set up for their retirement, the latter are just desperate to get onto the property ladder. There are 6 episodes in total featuring projects which range from an eco-house to a factory-built modular house erected in just two weeks.

Eventually, these self builders will create a brand new street in Britain’s biggest self build project. This development of over 1,900 homes is set to revolutionise the way in which properties are designed and built by offering a flexible alternative to the usual routes. This series has shown how self-building is becoming increasingly popular.

It is unsurprising that many visitors who come to the ECLISSE London showroom or who visit our exhibitions stands at Grand Designs Live Shows and the Homebuilding and Renovating Shows are self-builders embarking on, usually their first, but sometime their second, self-build project. Both architects and self-builders are now much more aware of the benefits to be enjoyed by installing pockets doors into a layout both from a space and design perspective. We are noticing very many more plans are being shown to us with pocket doors already incorporated into the design from the outset.

In order to help self-builders, better visualise how pocket doors can be incorporated into their interiors, we are taking part in the Build It Live Show at Bicester this year on the 8/9 June and we are also going to have our products featured in Build It magazine’s Self Build Education House at Graven Hill. It seems fitting that this is all happening in the year that Build It Magazine and ECLISSE both celebrate their 30-year anniversary.
